The martial art of Taekwondo derived from Korea. The name means "the art of hand and foot fighting". "Tae" means "to kick", "kwon" means "fist" or "to punch" and "do" means "way" or "art". It was was developed from native Korean martial arts, such as "Taek kyon", with additions from others, such as chuan fa (Chinese boxing; "kung fu"), Karate and Aikido. The combination kick movements used when sparring are the trademark of this sport.
Taekwondo's basic philosophy is: "Those who practice the martial must practice the virtue - taking virtuous teachings to be primary, and martial technique to be secondary." The sport of taekwondo is now practiced in more than 160 countries.
